Earlier this week, Gerald Chan acquired the Spire Printing Company property in Dorchester’s Savin Hill. The property sits by the MBTA Red Line, and was purchased for $17 million. The property is comprised primarily of surface parking and landscaping, with a two-story, 78,000-square-foot industrial building located on site. This is the third parcel of land that Chan has acquired in Dorchester. He and other developers are working to rezone the lot, which would create a lot of new opportunities in the area. The Boston Planning & Development Agency is looking for new public uses for Charlestown’s Navy Yard. An urban beach, swimming pools, an outdoor theater, climbing wall, and maritime science and history park are among the suggestions for the Navy Yard. Owners of the Marina have envisioned a year-round event space, community pool and park space on Pier 5. Other developers have suggested an outdoor gym along the Harborwalk, jogging track, paddle boarding facilities, an amphitheater, and space for condos. All of these new features would elevate the various piers in the Navy Yard. Stay tuned for more information as this story develops further.

Trinity Green Development LLC of Milton, is proposing a new 54-unit complex at 20 West Fifth Street, which currently houses Colmar Belting Co. Colmar has been in this South Boston location since 1970, but does plan to relocate. Trinity already owns the building, and with city approval this could be South Boston's newest residential complex. There are some zoning variances and restrictions at the moment that could prevent this from happening since it is in a manufacturing district. The development team is working to keep the integrity of the structure and respect to height, density, setbacks, parking and design in order to achieve a proposed project.
